About This Course

The Reading and Writing Workshop is a practice-oriented module designed for third-year students of English Studies. It aims to consolidate and extend students' academic literacy by developing their ability to engage critically with a variety of written and audiovisual texts while producing structured and coherent written work.

The overall competency targeted by this course is to be able to read, analyze, and produce academic and media texts effectively by mobilizing appropriate linguistic, analytical, and writing skills within academic contexts. This is a complex performance, which students will gradually develop by acquiring knowledge, applying practical skills, and adopting appropriate academic attitudes. In terms of knowledge,

  • to provide students with the fundamental concepts related to
    text analysis, discourse types, and media interpretation, as well as the principles of
    academic writing and organization.

In terms of skills (know-how),

  • to train students in analyzing written and audiovisual texts using appropriate
    analytical frameworks,
  • to develop their ability to produce structured academic texts such as reports
    and essays,
  •  to enable them to use appropriate academic language, register, and
    organization in their writing.
    In terms of attitudes (know-how),
  • to foster critical thinking and reflective engagement with texts and media,
  • to encourage autonomy in learning and responsibility in task completion,
  •  to promote collaboration through group work, peer review, and constructive
    feedback practices.

Requirements

To fully benefit from this course, students are expected to have:

  • An upper-intermediate level of English (B2)
  • Basic knowledge of academic writing (paragraph structure, coherence, cohesion)
  • Familiarity with different text types (descriptive, narrative, expository)
  • Introductory awareness of media texts (songs, films, and their purposes)
